How are Luxury Watches Made?

How are luxury watches made? A lot goes in

Luxury watches deliver a powerful statement about its wearer. They enhance your persona and boost your confidence. However, luxury watches can be very expensive and out of reach for many people. This is because each luxury watch has its own story to tell.

Luxury watches are handcrafted and custom-built. Though the individual processes may differ from one watchmaker to another, we have compiled a list of processes that are common for most watchmakers.

Read on below to know how luxury watches are made and why they are so special.

Made-to-order Steel

  • Steel is one of the most widely used materials for the production of luxury watches. It offers multiple comparative advantages. It is cheaper yet delivers a fine finish, is corrosion-resistant, and lightweight.

Steel comes in many variations. The majority of luxury watchmakers opt for stainless steel because of its unique qualities. They usually prefer a better grade of stainless steel that is not commonly available in the market.

  • Some luxury watchmakers use custom-designed steel. This steel cannot be found in any other watch. It is highly resistant to rust and corrosion. It can also withstand pressure, scratches and holds its polish longer than stainless steel.

Research and Development Facility

Watchmakers have multiple research and development (R&D) facilities in different countries, each with its own unique purpose. The primary function of such R&D facilities is to innovate and continually improve production processes. They will invest resources to determine efficient means of production. Watchmakers also invest millions of dollars into developing the best version of a lubricant that is used in their watches. The lubricant must work for decades, flawlessly.

  • The secondary purpose of an R&D facility is to test out the design of the watches. Companies run several tests to determine the ergonomic feasibility of watches. The watch’s surface will be rubbed against different types of fabric to determine its ability to resist scratches. The dials will be rotated in either direction thousands of times. The hands-on the clock’s face will be moved for hours to determine if the internal moving parts are working smoothly.

Thus, R&D is expensive, but it results in product durability and customer satisfaction.

Luxury watchmakers focus on quality rather than quantity. They have a clique of limited customers who appreciate this unique art form.

  • Watchmakers employ experts that have graduated from prestigious watchmaking schools. These experts carefully assemble each watch piece-by-piece. Everything, from the internal spokes to the hands on the clock face, is intricately assembled by hand. A great deal of attention is paid to precision and care. Each watch is then verified by another expert before moving it to the packaging department.

The inventory and supply room are usually automated. Here robots supply parts on the conveyor belts to the assembly room. These robots also keep track of the inventory and place orders when items are running low.

In-house Foundry

  • Luxury watchmakers have in-house foundries that smelt precious metals such as gold. This allows for a greater degree of quality control. They also have units that specialize in polishing, cutting, and shaping of jewels that are then added to their watches.

Each of the above processes inevitably adds value to the luxury watch, making it one costly purchase. If you are looking to purchase a luxury watch but don’t want to break your budget, we recommend purchasing a pre-owned luxury watch from a reliable watch trading company.

Lido Watch Club is one such company, that offers a variety of pre-owned watches at affordable prices. They authenticate each watch and offer a one-year warranty as well.
